The week leading up to Christmas was a whirlwind of emotions.
The kids asked a thousand questions.
“Does he know what we look like?” “Will he be nice?” “Why did he leave us?”
I answered them honestly but gently. They deserved the truth.
On Christmas Eve, I dressed them carefully — not to show off, but to show respect for who they were. Matching red and green outfits with little touches that made each child unique. I wore a simple deep green dress that made me feel strong.
As we drove through the snowy streets toward Derek’s sprawling new house in the mountains, Logan asked from the backseat, “Mom, what if he doesn’t want us?”
