I searched for an emergency locksmith willing to come out in the middle of the night. About an hour later, an exhausted-looking older man arrived on my porch carrying a heavy drill case. “You want every lock changed tonight?” he asked, studying my face. “Is everything okay?” “No,” I answered honestly. “But it will be.” He seemed to understand that I did not want to explain further. For the next two hours, the sharp sound of his drill cut through the quiet neighborhood. One by one, the old brass cylinders dropped into a metal bucket. One by one, newly cut keys were placed in my hand. “Would you like a few extra copies?” he asked, wiping the sweat from his forehead. “No,” I replied. “After tonight, I’ll be much more careful about who gets a key.” Strangely, I slept better than I had in months. The house felt protected. Sealed. Mine again. But that sense of safety did not last long. At exactly 7:18 the next morning, a heavy pounding rattled my newly secured front door. It was not a polite knock. It was the kind of pounding made by someone who expected the door to open immediately. For a moment, I wondered whether my husband had already discovered that the cards were useless. Had his perfect Cancun escape fallen apart before breakfast? The taxi approached, and Tom signaled for it to pull over. “Hey, taxi driver, get out!” he barked. “Do you think you own the road? Driving so fast? Pay a €500 fine now!” The driver, Mike, trembled. “Officer, I haven’t broken any rules. Please, I don’t have that kind of money!” Tom’s face turned red. “Don’t argue. If you can’t pay, are you driving for free? Show me your license and registration—this taxi isn’t stolen, is it?” Mike handed over the papers. Everything was in perfect order. Yet Tom still demanded: “Even with the papers correct, pay €500 now—or €300 at least—or I’ll impound your taxi immediately.” Sarah watched, furious but composed. She observed how Tom was harassing a hardworking man, extorting money for no reason. Mike pleaded: “Officer, I’ve only earned €50 today! I have small children. Please, sir, have mercy.” Tom exploded, shoving the driver roughly. “If you can’t pay, why drive? Who gave you this road? Arguing with me? Let’s see how fun it is at the station.” Sarah could no longer stand by. She stepped forward, placing herself between Tom and the driver. “Sergeant, you are completely wrong. The driver did nothing wrong. You have no right to fine him or assault him.
