PART 3 – The Christmas Dinner That Exploded
Chaos erupted.
Derek’s mother started crying. His new wife looked like she was going to faint. His brother tried to laugh it off like it was a joke.
But it wasn’t a joke.
Derek stared at the four children like they were ghosts.
“You hid them from me?” he whispered.
“I didn’t hide them,” I said. “You left. You said you didn’t want kids. You said I was broken. So I raised them alone. And I did a damn good job.”
The kids stood tall beside me.
Harper, never one to stay quiet, looked at Derek’s new wife and said, “Are you our new stepmom? You look younger than Mom.”
Madison turned bright red.
Derek tried to regain control. “This is insane. You can’t just show up with four kids and—”
“Oh, but you can invite me here to humiliate me?” I cut him off. “You wanted to parade your perfect new life in front of your ‘sad, childless’ ex-wife. Well, here’s the truth you ran away from.”
His father finally spoke, voice shaking. “Derek… are these really your children?”
Before Derek could answer, little Mason stepped forward and held up a drawing he had made in the car — a picture of our family of five.
“We don’t need you,” Mason said bravely. “But Mom said we should give you a chance to do better.”
The room was stunned.
Then Derek’s new wife turned to him and whispered, “You told me she couldn’t have kids…”
The betrayal in her voice was clear.
I looked at the man I once loved and felt nothing but peace.
Because I wasn’t here for revenge.
