The emergency room at Hospital General de Ecatepec was chaotic, but the moment Valeria was wheeled in, everything became deadly silent.
Her small body was burning with fever. Her abdomen was so swollen and hard that the doctors exchanged worried glances. They immediately ordered an ultrasound.
José arrived running, still wearing his dirty work apron, his face soaked with tears and sweat.
“Where is my daughter?!” he shouted. “Valeria! Papá is here!”
Lupita was already in the hallway, crying uncontrollably. When she saw José, she screamed at him:
“What did you do to her?! She said your name on the phone!”
José fell to his knees.
“I swear on my life… I would never hurt her. Never!”
Ten minutes later, the head pediatrician, Dr. Elena Vargas, walked out of the examination room. Her face was pale.
Everyone stood up.
Dr. Vargas looked at José, then at Lupita, and spoke with a heavy voice:
“Valeria has severe internal bleeding. Her uterus and lower abdomen show clear signs of trauma… repeated trauma.”
The hallway went completely quiet.
José blinked, confused. “Trauma? Like… she fell?”
Dr. Vargas shook her head slowly.
“No, Mr. Hernández. This is not from falling. The injuries are consistent with repeated sexual abuse. Some are old. Some are very recent.”
Lupita let out a heartbreaking scream and collapsed.
José stared at the doctor like the world had ended.
“No… no, that can’t be. My daughter… my little girl…”
Dr. Vargas continued, her voice breaking slightly:
“There is something else. We found traces of a sedative in her blood. The kind used to make children sleepy. The tacos she ate tonight were most likely drugged.”
José’s legs gave out. He slid down the wall, sobbing like a broken man.
“I brought the tacos… Mr. Ramón bought them. He said he wanted to help because we had no money for dinner…”
At that moment, everything clicked.
Mr. Ramón — the “kind” neighbor who always offered help, who brought food, who played with Valeria when her parents were busy.
He wasn’t helping.
He was hunting.
The police immediately issued an arrest warrant for Ramón Morales.
But he had already disappeared.
