Three days later, the whole family gathered at my parents’ house for what they thought was the “celebration dinner” to discuss Ebony’s wedding plans.
I walked in with Maya’s hand in mine and a thick folder tucked under my arm. The cut on my cheek was still fresh, covered with a thin bandage. Every time they looked at it, I made sure they remembered exactly who put it there.
The table was set like always — my mother’s best china, the roast on a silver platter, and that fake air of holiness hanging over everything. My father said grace like he hadn’t tried to crush my windpipe four days earlier. Ebony was already talking about designer dresses and destination bachelorette trips in Miami.
I let them talk. I let them dream.
Then I placed the folder on the table with a soft thud.
“I’ve decided to help with the wedding,” I said calmly. “But first, I want to show you something.”
I opened the folder and began sliding out papers one by one.
Bank statements showing thousands of dollars my parents had secretly transferred from my old accounts over the years. Screenshots of text messages where Ebony bragged about “milking” me. Audio recordings — crystal clear — of my mother calling me worthless while I was paying their bills. And the video. The hallway camera footage of my father slamming me into the wall and my mother slicing my face open.
The room went deathly silent.
My mother’s fork clattered onto her plate. My father’s face turned ashen. Ebony looked like she’d been slapped.
“You recorded us?” my father hissed.
I looked him straight in the eyes.
“Every single time you put your hands on me. Every demand. Every insult. I have three months of evidence. Enough for criminal charges — assault, elder financial abuse, and even child endangerment for what Maya witnessed.”
Maya squeezed my hand tighter. I gently kissed the top of her head.
My mother tried to recover, voice shaking with righteous anger. “After everything we’ve done for you—”
“Done for me?” I laughed bitterly. “You’ve taken from me since I was sixteen. You made me believe love had to be earned with money and silence. But I’m done paying for your approval.”
I slid the final document across the table.
“This is a legal cease-and-desist. If any of you contact me or Maya again — or come near my house — I will file charges. And I will make sure every church member, every neighbor, and every one of Ebony’s fancy wedding guests sees exactly who you are.”
