PART 2: THE SECRET UNRAVELS
The church fell silent.
Every eye turned toward the source of the sound—the sudden scraping of the chair from the third row. The guests exchanged uneasy glances, unsure if they had misheard. Kemi’s father, his face a mask of polite confusion, narrowed his eyes toward the disruption.
And then, a voice rang out.
“I have a reason,” the voice said.
It was a woman’s voice—calm, cold, yet full of authority. The kind of voice that could silence a room without raising its volume.
Kemi’s heart skipped a beat. She turned, searching the crowd, but she didn’t see anyone step forward.
Then, from the middle of the third row, a figure stood.
It was a woman, but not just any woman. This was someone Kemi hadn’t seen in years—someone she never expected to be standing in this church at all.
Michele.
Her heart dropped into her stomach as the woman’s face became clearer. Kemi’s mind raced to catch up with the realization. It couldn’t be. Michele had been Femi’s fiancée years ago. She had been there before Kemi and Femi had found each other again. But the woman had vanished—gone without a trace after Femi left.
Now, here she was.
Kemi’s father’s face grew tight. His expression turned from curiosity to concern. Kemi could feel his grip tightening on her arm, but she didn’t look at him. She couldn’t. Her eyes were fixed on Michele.
The woman’s dark eyes locked onto Femi, who was standing at the altar, his expression suddenly shifting from confidence to panic.
“Kemi…” Femi whispered, trying to catch her eye. But Kemi didn’t look at him.
Michele took a slow step forward, her heels clicking against the polished marble floors of the church. Every step was deliberate. Every movement was full of purpose.
“Femi Adebayo,” she said, her voice cutting through the silence. “You really thought you could just sweep the past under the rug, didn’t you?”
Femi’s jaw tightened, and Kemi could see the sweat forming on his brow. He didn’t answer.
Michele’s eyes flashed with bitterness. “You left me, Femi. Without a word, without an explanation. And now you come back and pretend nothing happened. But I’m not here for you, Femi. I’m here for Kemi.”
Kemi’s heart began to race. She turned to her father, but he remained stoic, his expression unreadable.
Michele’s gaze softened, but it wasn’t kindness that filled her eyes. It was something more complex—something far darker.
“I owe Kemi the truth,” Michele continued. “And Femi owes her the truth too. You see, Femi isn’t who you think he is.”
The words hit Kemi like a slap.
“What?” Kemi gasped. Her legs felt weak beneath her, but she couldn’t move. The truth was a sharp, heavy weight in the air.
Femi finally spoke, his voice weak. “Michele, this isn’t the time. This is a wedding.”
Michele tilted her head, as if considering his words, before her lips curled into a faint, bitter smile. “The wedding? The wedding? You haven’t even told her everything, have you? All the lies you’ve been hiding. Lies about me. Lies about her. About everything. Do you think Kemi is really ready to marry someone who’s been hiding secrets all along?”
Femi’s face turned pale. He started to shake his head, trying to move toward Michele, but she stepped back, holding up her hand.
“Kemi,” Michele said, her voice now softer, but her eyes never left Femi. “What if I told you Femi didn’t leave the country because he had to? What if I told you he wasn’t just going to work in some far-off city like he told you?”
Kemi’s mind was spinning. The words didn’t make sense. What did she mean? What was Michele saying?
“Tell her, Femi,” Michele urged. “Tell her what you did after you left me. Tell her why you came back.”
Kemi felt the tears sting the corners of her eyes. She looked at Femi, desperately searching for an answer.
Femi opened his mouth, but the words didn’t come. His throat constricted, and his lips trembled.
Then Michele dropped the bombshell.
“I came to the city, Kemi, because I was hired to follow him,” Michele said, her voice now a whisper that only Kemi could hear. “I was hired to make sure he came back to you. You’re not his first choice, Kemi. You’re his second. You’re not the woman he wanted. You’re the woman he needed to replace me.”
The room seemed to spin.
For a moment, everything around Kemi blurred into nothingness.
Her legs went weak.
“Michele, stop it,” Femi finally cried, reaching out toward her. “Please. You’re wrong.”
But it was too late. Kemi could hear everything.
