PART 2 – The Past That Refused to Stay Buried
The next 48 hours were hell.
Evelyn’s husband, Sheriff Dale McKinney, had pull. He claimed Evelyn had kidnapped the children and was unstable. Lauren, Colton’s ex-wife, had apparently been feeding him lies for months — claiming Colton was dangerous, unstable, and had threatened her during their marriage.
It was all coordinated.
They wanted Evelyn back under control.
They wanted Colton broken and humiliated again.
But they made one mistake.
They underestimated Ruth Whitaker.
Colton’s mother had spent decades watching powerful men play dirty games. She started making calls. Old friends. Judges. People who owed the Whitaker family favors.
Meanwhile, Evelyn broke down one night on the porch, telling Colton the full truth.
Dale wasn’t just abusive.
He was running drugs through the county using his badge as cover.
And Lauren had been helping him.
Colton listened, then made a decision.
“We’re not running,” he told Evelyn. “We’re fighting.”
The children could feel the tension. Little Grace started having nightmares. Jackson stopped smiling. Maddie asked if they were going to have to leave again.
Colton found himself doing something he hadn’t done in years — comforting them. Telling stories. Letting them ride horses with him.
For the first time, the big, empty ranch started to feel like a home.
Then came the night Dale and two deputies showed up with fake warrants to take the children.
They came at midnight.
But Colton was ready.
He met them on the porch with a shotgun and a look that would make most men turn around.
“You’re not taking them,” he said.
Dale laughed.
“You really want to go to war with me, Whitaker?”
Before Colton could answer, little Maddie stepped out from behind him, holding up her tablet.
