Part 2:

Vanessa’s pulse quickened as she tiptoed down the hallway, her breath shallow. The soft voices grew louder as she approached the living room. She pressed herself against the wall, just around the corner, careful not to make a sound. Her mind was spinning with a thousand possibilities, but nothing prepared her for what she heard next.

“I know it’s hard,” the woman’s voice continued, her tone soft but filled with urgency. “But this isn’t just about the baby. It’s about us.”

“Us?” Eric’s voice was lower, almost a whisper, but Vanessa could hear the tension. “I don’t know how to explain this. I don’t want to hurt her… not until I have the results.”

Vanessa’s stomach dropped as the pieces began to fall into place. She had been so sure of their life together, so convinced of the trust they had built over the years. But now, with every word, it was shattering in front of her.

“Eric,” the woman said again, her voice now trembling, “if she finds out everything now, it could destroy her. Please, just wait. It’s better this way. Wait for the results and then—”

“No!” Eric cut her off sharply. “I need to know the truth. I need to know if I’m really—” He broke off mid-sentence, his words hanging in the air.

Vanessa’s mind was racing, trying to put together the jumbled pieces. The baby. The woman’s voice. The DNA test. Was Eric hiding something from her? Who was this woman? And why was she in their home, in the early hours of the morning, talking about the baby like it was something far more than just a random occurrence?

Without thinking, Vanessa stepped forward, her heartbeat pounding in her ears. She rounded the corner and entered the living room, her voice cold and trembling with anger.

“Eric, who is she?” she demanded, her eyes locked onto the woman sitting on the couch.

Eric’s face drained of color. The woman froze, her eyes widening in panic.

“Vanessa… I—” Eric began, his voice breaking. He looked at the woman, then back at Vanessa, clearly caught between two worlds.

The woman stood up slowly, her face a mix of fear and regret. “I’m sorry, Vanessa,” she said quietly, her eyes full of guilt. “I didn’t mean for you to find out like this.”

Vanessa’s eyes darted from the woman to Eric, her heart pounding. She didn’t know what to say, didn’t know how to process the storm of emotions ripping through her. Anger, confusion, betrayal.

“Who are you?” Vanessa asked, her voice barely a whisper, still trying to make sense of the situation. “And what the hell is going on?”

The woman took a deep breath and sat back down, her hands shaking as she folded them in her lap. “I’m Amy,” she said softly. “And… I’m the baby’s mother.”

Vanessa’s world tilted. The blood drained from her face, and she stumbled back a step, as if she’d been struck. “What?”

Amy nodded, her eyes welling with tears. “I… I couldn’t take care of him anymore. I’ve been struggling, and… I didn’t know what to do. So, I left him at your doorstep.” She wiped a tear from her cheek. “I never meant for it to go this far.”

Vanessa looked at Eric, who stood frozen, looking like a man caught in a lie he couldn’t escape from. “And you’ve been hiding this from me? For how long, Eric? How long have you known about this?”

Eric swallowed hard, avoiding her gaze. “I didn’t know what to do, Vanessa. I thought I could handle it, I thought I could take care of him and keep this from you until I had more answers. I wanted to tell you, but I didn’t know how.”

Amy stood up, looking at Vanessa with remorse. “Please… don’t blame him. This wasn’t his fault. I made the choice, not him.”

Vanessa’s mind was spinning. Her breath was shallow as the pieces of her life—her marriage, her trust in Eric—began to crumble. How could this be happening? How could Eric, the man she trusted, be hiding something like this from her?

“No,” Vanessa whispered, her voice shaking with emotion. “This is your fault too, Amy. You can’t just drop a baby on someone’s doorstep and disappear. And you… Eric.” Her voice cracked, “How long were you going to keep this from me? How could you think I wouldn’t find out?”

Eric took a step forward, his hands raised in surrender. “I swear, I didn’t want to hurt you, Vanessa. I was just trying to do the right thing. I’ve been trying to protect you, to protect our life…”

But Vanessa wasn’t listening anymore. The hurt and betrayal were too much. She turned, her mind a blur of confusion and anger, and fled out the back door, needing space, needing air to think, to breathe.

She walked outside, her bare feet cold against the pavement, as the reality of what had just unfolded sank in.

The woman in her house was the baby’s mother. Eric had known all along. And now, the truth that had been kept hidden from her was out in the open. The lies, the secrets, the entire foundation of their relationship, shaken to its core.

Part 3:

Vanessa didn’t know how long she stood there, staring into the quiet, dark backyard, the cool night air brushing against her skin. The questions swirling in her mind had no answers, only more confusion and anger. Why hadn’t Eric been honest with her? Why hadn’t he told her the truth from the beginning?

The baby in their bed. The DNA results. The lies. Everything felt like a bad dream she couldn’t wake up from.

But she knew one thing—she needed answers. And she wasn’t going to get them standing out here alone in the dark.

She turned and walked back inside, but the moment she stepped through the door, she was hit with the weight of everything. Eric was standing in the kitchen, his face pale, his eyes filled with remorse. Amy had left. She was gone, but the damage was already done.

“Vanessa,” Eric began, his voice soft, but she couldn’t stand hearing it anymore. The apologies, the excuses—they all felt hollow.

“Don’t,” Vanessa interrupted, her voice sharp. “Don’t even try to apologize. Don’t explain it away like it’s something I can just forgive.”

Eric opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He could see the anger and hurt in her eyes—the way she was looking at him like he was a stranger.

“I don’t know who you are anymore,” Vanessa said, her voice breaking. “You’re not the man I married. You lied to me, you kept this from me… and I don’t even know if I can trust you anymore.”

Eric’s shoulders slumped, and for the first time, he looked defeated. “Vanessa… I’m so sorry. Please… I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

But the damage was already done. The trust was broken, and once that was gone, there was no easy way to fix it.

Vanessa didn’t know what came next. She didn’t know what her future with Eric looked like. All she knew was that she couldn’t keep living in this lie. And for the first time, she wasn’t sure if the man she had loved was even capable of telling the truth anymore.

“I need time, Eric,” she said, her voice quieter now. “I need time to think.”

She walked away from him, the silence of their house settling between them like a wall.

And as she made her way to the bedroom, the baby still on her mind, she realized that the truth had already changed everything.
