MY EIGHT-MONTH PREGNANT WIFE WAS STANDING ALONE WASHING A MOUNTAIN OF DISHES

When I saw my eight-month pregnant wife standing alone, washing a mountain of dishes at ten in the evening, something inside me snapped. I gathered my three younger sisters in the living room, and the words I spoke silenced them. But it was my own mother’s reaction that shattered my heart even more.

The Blind Pillar

My name is Gabriel, thirty-two years old and a successful software engineer. When my father died five years ago, I took on the responsibility for my family. I bought the large house we now live in. I let my mother, Mama Susan, and my three younger sisters—Valerie (25), Beatrice (22), and Stella (19)—live with me. All of them depend on my salary—from tuition fees and allowances to their personal luxuries.

Two years ago, I married Clara. She is the kindest and most understanding woman I have ever met. She did nothing but love me and serve my family. When she became pregnant, I promised she would never have to overexert herself. But because I was buried in overtime work to cover my siblings’ growing expenses, I became blind to what was really happening inside my own home.

The Scene in the Kitchen

One Friday night, I came home around ten in the evening, exhausted from traffic and work. As I entered, I heard loud laughter from the living room.

I saw Valerie, Beatrice, and Stella lounging on the soft sofa, watching a K-drama on the large flat-screen TV while eating pizza and milk tea they had ordered using my credit card. Mama Susan was with them, even getting a foot massage from Stella.

“Where’s Clara?” I asked while taking off my shoes.

“Oh, Ate Clara? She’s probably in the kitchen washing dishes. Not sure,” Valerie answered casually without even looking away from the TV.

I frowned and walked toward the kitchen. When I turned the corner, the sight before me felt like a knife stabbing straight into my chest.

There she was, standing by the sink. Eight months pregnant. Her large belly almost pressed against the counter. Her legs were trembling, one hand holding her aching back, while the other struggled to scrub a massive pile of dirty pots, pans, and plates used by my family all day.

She was sweating. And when I looked closer, I saw that she was silently crying.

“My wife… crying from exhaustion… while my sisters relaxed in comfort.”

“C-Clara…” I called, my voice shaking.
