I’ve always lived with a quiet kind of fear

I stepped inside.

Standing in the kitchen. Holding a glass of water.

Looking exactly like he used to when he was little and something had gone wrong.

“Mom…”

“What happened?” I asked, my voice shaking.

The officer gently placed my younger son on the couch.
