PART 2 – The Secrets She Started to Reveal
The first big lucid moment happened on a rainy Tuesday night.
I was helping her eat dinner when she suddenly grabbed my wrist with surprising strength.
“Harper,” she said, voice completely clear. “Your grandfather didn’t die in a car accident. They killed him.”
I nearly dropped the spoon.
“What?”
She leaned in, eyes sharp.
“Your uncle and aunt… they poisoned him. He found out about the money they were stealing from the family trust. They made it look like an accident. I have proof. I hid it.”
My hands started shaking.
“Grandma… are you sure?”
She nodded slowly.
“Safety deposit box. Bank on Maple Street. Number 4729. The key is sewn into the lining of my old blue coat.”
That night, after she fell asleep, I tore open the lining of her old coat.
Inside was a tiny silver key.
The next morning, I drove to the bank with my heart in my throat.
The box contained:
- A copy of my grandfather’s original will leaving everything to my grandmother.
- Audio recordings of my uncle and aunt arguing about “finishing the old man off.”
- Bank statements showing hundreds of thousands of dollars moved into offshore accounts.
- A letter from my grandmother, dated three years ago, explaining everything in perfect handwriting.
I sat in my car in the bank parking lot and cried for twenty minutes.
My family hadn’t just abandoned her.
They had tried to erase her.
And now they were terrified she might remember enough to destroy them.
Two days later, my uncle called me.
His voice was ice cold.
