PART 3 – The Night They Came Back
They showed up at 2:17 a.m.
I woke up to the sound of my front door being jimmied open.
My grandmother was already awake, sitting up in bed with surprising clarity.
“They’re here,” she whispered. “They want the key.”
I grabbed my phone, dialed 911, and hid us both in the closet with a baseball bat.
The intruders — two men I didn’t recognize — tore through my apartment looking for the safety deposit box key and any evidence.
They were whispering to each other.
“Boss said burn everything. Especially the old lady.”
My blood ran cold.
Just as one of them opened the closet door, police sirens wailed outside.
The men ran.
But not before one of them looked straight at me and said, “This isn’t over, girl. Your grandma knows too much.”
The police took a report, but without clear evidence of who sent them, they couldn’t do much.
The next morning, I made a decision.
I called a friend who worked at a local news station.
I gave her copies of everything.
And I told my grandmother what I was planning.
