PART 3 – The Apology That Came Too Late

I stood up and looked my sister dead in the eyes.

“Share with the family that just made my kids eat Christmas dinner in a freezing basement?”

The words hung in the air like smoke.

My father tried to step in. “Let’s all calm down. We’re family—”

“No,” I cut him off. “We stopped being family the moment you all decided we were less than.”

Elena checked her watch.

“You have forty-three minutes.”

Brooke’s husband tried to negotiate. My mother cried. Even my father — who had barely spoken to me in two years — offered a weak apology.

But it wasn’t enough.

Not for what they put my children through.

At 11:57 p.m., Elena stood up and began packing her documents.

“Time’s almost up.”

Brooke finally cracked.

She stepped forward, voice shaking with rage and desperation.

“I’m sorry, okay? I’m sorry we made you eat down here. It was rude.”

I looked at my kids.

Harper was holding my hand tightly.

Mason was watching me, waiting to see what kind of mother I would be.

I turned back to my sister.

“Your apology doesn’t feel real, Brooke. And my husband wanted real.”

Elena closed her briefcase.
