Background
My brother Jake has been with his wife Kate since high school. They built their entire adult lives together, got married young, and now have two kids who are my godkids. I’ve always been very close with Jake—honestly, he’s basically my best friend. We’ve shared everything from childhood memories to adult struggles, and I’ve always been in his corner.
My sister Claire is also closely tied into this whole dynamic. She’s been friends with Kate since middle school. They were each other’s Maid of Honor, stayed very close through adulthood, and their friendship has always been one of those long-term, deeply rooted bonds.
Because of this, the family connections are very intertwined. Any tension between Jake and Kate doesn’t just affect them—it ripples through everyone.
What Jake Confided
About six months ago, Jake told me something he had been carrying privately: he had developed feelings for a coworker, and things eventually crossed a line into a physical affair.
He didn’t tell me casually. It was something he seemed conflicted about, and he was clearly struggling with guilt and uncertainty. After hearing him out, I encouraged him to be honest with Kate rather than continuing to live a double life. My reasoning was that secrecy would only make things worse in the long run, especially with kids involved.
Eventually, he did tell her.
Kate was initially in denial and wanted to try to work through things. Jake, however, felt that staying would mean he wasn’t being honest with himself. Not long after, they began the process of separating and moving toward divorce.
Shortly after that, Jake and the coworker became a couple.
