Jerry shook his head quickly.
“No. You survived. That’s what matters.”
He pulled her into his arms.
Tight.
Protective.
Real.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Jerry drew back, his eyes wet.
“We are going to the police.”
Mirabel nodded immediately.
“I was waiting for you to say that.”
Jerry stood. His expression changed. The grieving husband receded. In his place stood the decisive CEO who made billion-naira decisions without hesitation.
He pulled out his phone and dialed a number.
“Commissioner Bello,” he said when the call connected. “I need you immediately. It is urgent and sensitive.”
He paused.
“Yes,” he added quietly. “It involves attempted murder.”
Mirabel watched him.
For the first time since the market, she looked safe.
But inside Jerry, another fear was growing.
If his mother had gone this far, what else had she prepared?
Thirty minutes later, two unmarked police vehicles entered the garden quietly.
Commissioner Bello stepped out, serious and alert.
“Mr. Okafor,” he said, “you sounded disturbed.”
Jerry turned slightly.
Mirabel stepped into the light.
The commissioner froze.
