I HID MY IDENTITY AND WENT TO WORK IN MY HUSBAND’S COMPANY. WHEN I TOOK HER THERMOS, THE SECRETARY CAME AT ME

I hid my identity and started working with false documents in the Grupo Monteverde corporation itself, my husband’s company. When my father died, he left me an empire worth billions of pesos that had started as a small assembly workshop in Monterrey. I, his only daughter, handed over the entire administration to my husband, Alejandro, and decided to step aside to become the quiet wife who always supported him.

For three years I believed that sacrifice would give me a peaceful home. But Alejandro began to move further and further away. Business trips became longer, and on her clothes she no longer only smelled of liquor… also of a feminine perfume that I didn’t know. My intuition told me that something was very wrong. And I decided to find out for myself.

I put on a simple white blouse, black office pants and put my hair up in a high bun. No one would have recognized Valeria Monteverde, the heiress of the group, in me. I joined as a basic level administrative assistant. The first day I made copies, organized files, made coffee, and set up the meeting room. At lunchtime, the area manager ordered me to bring a tray of drinks to the general manager’s office.

The door was half closed.

I was going to play… but I stopped dead when I heard voices inside.

It was Camila, Alejandro’s new secretary. He spoke in a honeyed tone, mocking me without knowing that I was listening. She said that I was useless, that I was a dull woman, good only at locking herself in the house, incapable of understanding the business world. She boasted that she was the woman who deserved to be next to the CEO.

I was paralyzed.

The tray began to shake in my hands.

I waited to hear Alejandro defend his wife. I waited for him to shut her up. I hoped for at least a little dignity.

But not.

He let out a dry laugh and played along.

He said that I was boring, insipid, that I had only put up with it for three years because I was the founder’s daughter. He promised Camila that he would soon get me out of the way… and then give her the place she deserved.

The coffee in the cup shook.

Every word was like a knife slowly burying itself in my chest.

I took a deep breath, pushed the door and walked in.

The two were startled and immediately separated. Alejandro adjusted his jacket. Camila stood up with arrogance painted on her face.

I looked down, pretending to continue in my role as a humble employee, and left the cup on the desk.

Then Camila rushed towards me, hit the table with her palm and started shouting that I was filthy, an uncategorized hug, how dare I touch “her man’s” glass. Before I could say a word, he slapped me.

The blow sounded dry.

I felt my cheek burn. The metallic taste of blood filled my mouth and a warm drop ran down the corner of my lips.

I took a step back, staggering, but didn’t fall.

Camila stood in front of me with her hands on her waist, pointing at me as if I were trash. He insulted me, he called me little, insignificant, ordinary. The entire executive dining room was silent. Some looked at me with compassion. Others afraid.

I wiped the blood from my mouth and looked up.

Then I saw it.

In Camila’s hand shone a diamond ring with a delicate white gold rose design.

My chest tightened.

That ring was mine.

I had designed it myself to celebrate our third wedding anniversary. He had kept the original sketch in the house safe.

Alejandro paled when he noticed that he had seen him.

He tried to pull Camila to shut her up, but she kept screaming, demanding that I be fired immediately.

I did not say anything.

I turned around, left the office, and closed the door gently.

All the rage that had burned inside me began to cool until it became something much more dangerous: lucidity.

That was no longer just infidelity.

Those two were planning to strip me of everything.

That same night I returned home and didn’t cry.

I turned on the computer and entered the private control system that my father had left hidden from me years ago. I reviewed emails, transfers, account statements, contracts, internal authorizations.

What I found made my blood run cold.

Tens of millions of pesos had been diverted by Alejandro to three shell companies registered in the names of Camila’s brother and mother. He had also stolen my ring design to give to his lover.

I saved everything.

The discussion that afternoon had been recorded in the audio of my watch. Additionally, I recovered videos from a hidden camera installed months ago in the main office. The evidence was enough: adultery, corporate fraud, diversion of resources and a network of shell companies to empty the group’s assets.

I called Mr. Ramiro Salas, a lifelong friend of my father, and we met at an old tea house in San Pedro Garza García. When he finished reviewing the documents, he hit the table furiously.

That same night we prepared the divorce petition, the internal audit and the criminal complaint.

The next morning I dressed in a red, impeccable and powerful tailored suit, and entered the company with my true identity.

In the corporate dining room, Camila was sitting in the VIP area, showing off a thermos engraved with Alejandro’s name, as if she were already the lady of the house.

I approached without haste.

I took the thermos.

And I had a drink.

Camila screamed hysterically and ran towards me. He hit my hand and tried to slap me again. The plates fell to the floor and the roar left the entire dining room speechless.

Alejandro came running.

His face was broken.

He saw me… and his expression was filled with absolute terror.

But Camila, foolish and arrogant, continued insulting me without understanding anything.w

Then I raised my head and, in a firm voice, said:

—Of course I can take it. After all, this company, that office… and even the position that you believe you govern, belong to me. My name is Valeria Monteverde, president and majority shareholder of this group. And you… just attacked the owner in front of everyone.

—Of course I can take it —I repeated, looking directly at Camila—. Because this thermos, this company and everything you see here… belong to me. I am Valeria Monteverde, daughter of the founder, president of the board and majority shareholder of Grupo Monteverde.

The silence that followed was so dense that even the sound of the air conditioning seemed like thunder.

Camila blinked, confused.

Then he laughed nervously.

—You? The owner? Don’t make me laugh…

But his voice no longer sounded firm.

Alejandro, on the other hand, was completely pale.

—Valeria… I can explain it…

I turned my head slowly towards him.

—No. You already talked enough yesterday. I heard every word.

I pulled out my phone, tapped the screen, and within seconds, audio began playing through the dining room speakers.

Camila’s honeyed voice filled the place:

—Your wife is useless. A woman like her only gets in the way…

Then came Alejandro’s laughter.

Then his own voice, cold, cruel, unrecognizable to anyone who had ever believed in him:

—I put up with her for three years just because she was the founder’s daughter. But soon I’m going to get her out of the way. Then you will have the place you deserve.

A murmur ran through the dining room.

Some employees opened their eyes in horror. Others turned to look at Alexander as if they had suddenly discovered that the man they obeyed every day was a stranger.

Camila took a step back.

—That… that’s taken out of context…

—From context? —I asked calmly.

Then I raised my hand.

The dining room doors burst open.

Three people entered: Mr. Ramiro Salas, two external auditors… and behind them, four investigative police officers.

Alexander’s face crumbled.

—Valeria, please don’t do this here…

—Not here? —I barely smiled—. Curious. Yesterday you didn’t mind humiliating me here either.

Ramiro moved forward, opened a folder and spoke with a firm voice:

—Mr. Alejandro Fuentes, by instruction of the extraordinary council convened this morning, you are suspended from all your executive functions. In addition, there is a formal complaint for corporate fraud, diversion of resources, abuse of trust and use of shell companies for the illegal extraction of group funds.

Camila began to shake.

—No… no… this must be a mistake…

Ramiro didn’t even look at her.

—And you, Miss Camila Rivas, are included in the investigation for complicity, physical assault within corporate facilities and possible participation in irregular financial operations through immediate family members.

Camila turned to Alejandro as if waiting for him to save her.

—Tell them something! You said everything was covered! You said she was stupid who didn’t know anything!

It was like watching a rope break.

Everyone’s eyes passed from Camila to Alejandro.

And Alexander understood, too late, that the woman for whom he had betrayed his life had just buried him with her bare hands.

—Shut up! —he shouted.
